We don’t have to announce all of Jagdeo’s trips

“We don’t have any obligation to announce every time the president leaves the country,” said President Bharrat Jagdeo’s Press Liaison Officer, Kwame Mc Coy, when contacted yesterday about the silence that surrounded President Jagdeo’s s most recent trip overseas. President Jagdeo has left for Canada.
According to Mc Coy, there was no policy dictating that the President’s tips be officially announced every time he leaves the country and for what purpose. He did confirm, however, that President Jagdeo departed Guyana on Thursday for Canada, to take part in the Guyana festival.
Jagdeo participated in the opening ceremony at the L’Amoreaux Community Centre, located at 2000 McNichol Avenue in Scarborough, yesterday where he gave the main address. The Guyana Festival Committee expects the event to be attended by thousands of Guyanese and Canadians.
The Festival committee has expanded on the theme “A Taste of Guyana,” making the Festival an exposé of Guyanese Heritage and Culture in Canada.
Performances are planned by several celebrated Guyanese artists. Patrons also participated in the softball, soccer and dominoes’ competitions; shop the trade show for the finest piece of authentic Amerindian craft; feast on the best duck-curry or peas-and-rice in town; experience the uniqueness of a Guyanese Interfaith Service and reception, or just hang out with thousands of Guyanese at the Independence Lime, where they are guaranteed to meet an old friend for a ‘gyaff’.
The Twenty20 Cricket Competition featured three exciting games including the national team from Guyana, Scarborough League, the T&D League and the Etobicoke league.
Two distinguished Guyanese performers, Pamela Maynard and Aubrey Mann, were also awarded for their outstanding global musical achievements and cultural contributions.
Sunday at the Centre, activities have been expanded to make the festivities a fun and exciting one for the entire family.
The Duck Curry Cook-out competition, guaranteed to titillate the taste buds of patrons, has been expanded to ten competing chefs and more than 1,000 tastes. The winner of the competition will receive two tickets to Guyana and an opportunity to represent the Guyanese Diaspora in Canada, at the World Duck Curry Competition in Guyana later this year. The Festival brings to a close the annual Guyanese Heritage Celebrations, a month-long programme organised to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of Guyana’s Independence.
The celebrations commenced on May 23, with the Guyana Awards (Canada) Gala and included dozens of activities spanning five provinces, involving thousands of Guyanese and Canadians.
Jagdeo will leave Canada today for a conference in Geneva, Switzerland before returning to Guyana.
