Olympic Day 2009 will be celebrated on Saturday, June 27. As a result the Guyana Olympic Association has asked several National Federations to organise activities on that day, in accordance with the theme “Move, Learn and Discover”, as described on the International Olympic Committee website.
While keeping the traditional run, the NOCs are going to structure their activities around these three themes – Move: Through sporting activities, the participants, young or not so young, will feel better (or will be in better shape)
Learn: Sessions with athletes will allow the public to share in their experiences, and learn and put into practice the Olympic values in their everyday life.
Discover: Athletes or volunteers will be able to help the public to discover and practice their sports together.”
The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) plans to hold a mini-meet under the pillar “Discover”. In order to allow and encourage “the public to discover and practice” swimming, this mini-meet will last a maximum of two hours and will comprise only freestyle events.
Two trophies will be presented – one for the club or group that tallies the most points and one for the person (not registered with GASA), who has highest individual points.
There will be no entry fees for this competition and entries will be accepted up to one event in advance.
This meet is not only for competitive swimmers. There is no age limit – minimum or maximum. The only requirement is that you can swim at least two lengths of the pool in freestyle.
For more information, interested persons can visit the Colgrain Pool, Camp Street during normal working hours (phone number 226-0397) or phone the Secretary of GASA on 660-4289.
A fund-raising breakfast will be on sale during this event to assist the swimmers who will represent Guyana at this year’s Goodwill Swimming Championships.
