The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) last week created history, when it launched the first ever Berbice Cricket Academy during a simple ceremony at its head office, with sponsorship from the Bank of Nova Scotia.
The Academy, the first to be organised by a county board would be held from the June 27 to July 31 at the Port Mourant Community Centre and involves a total of 40 young cricketers consisting of 25 Under-15, Under17 and Under-19 players.
Chairman of the BCB special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster at the launching stated, the A
cademy is another major project of the board as part of a structured development programme, which aims to uplift the standard of cricket in the county. Foster, who also serves as the Board’s Public Relations Officer disclosed that the board was concerned that too many players representing Berbice had problems with their techniques and were unaware of their roles as sporting ambassadors among others.
The aims of the Academy are to develop the cricketing skills of players; educate them on the importance of education and discipline; teach them the requirements of a role model and sports ambassador and to develop leadership skills.
Foster informed that the Academy’s coaching staff would be headed by Senior Cricket Coach Michael Franco Hyles and would include three other coaches. Participants would be taught the basics in batting, fast bowling, spin bowling, fielding, wicketkeeping and physical fitness.
They would also be involved in classroom lectures on the role of Sports Ambassadors, the Importance of Discipline, Personal Hygiene, Public Speaking, HIV/AIDS, Drug Abuse, table manners and the history and structure of cricket among other things.
The PRO expressed the board’s gratitude to the Management and Staff of Scotia Bank for the sponsorship, noting that their investment would enable the board to nurture existing talents.
The bank’s sponsorship is worth $150,500, while the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club donated educational material to the sum of $100,000.
BCB president, Keith Foster, Treasurer Anil Beharry, and Chairman of the Competitions Committee Carl Moore also spoke at the launching with the president calling the launching of the Academy a long overdue project.
Foster, who was elected president earlier this year noted that Berbice cricket is undergoing massive development with numerous projects on and off the field. He called the academy the centerpiece of the board’s cricket development programme, as it is expected to assist in producing rounded individuals who are ready to play the game at the highest level. Beharry assured representatives of the bank that the Academy would be properly organized; all objectives would be achieved and all funds be used for its intended purpose and accounted for.
Moore, who is Guyana’s senior cricket team manager, praised the setting up of the Academy as it would assist the youths to properly develop their skills, while preparing them for the senior levels.
Mohamed Azim Credit Officer of the Bank, New Amsterdam Branch, stated that the bank was pleased to be associated with the Cricket Academy and praised the leadership of the BCB for its establishment. Scotia Bank, he said is heavily involved in West Indies cricket and this sponsorship is an extension of that support as it would assist young cricketers to develop into future regional players.
He also expressed confidence that the Academy would be properly organised and would achieve its stated goals.
