A Stabroek Market vendor was yesterday placed on a nine-month bond to keep the peace, after he pleaded guilty to spitting in a public place.
Sewcharran Rampersaud, 32, of 62 Independence Street, is accused of committing the act on June 19.
It was further alleged that Rampersaud, on June 19, used indecent language against a peace officer. Another charge stated that the accused resisted a peace officer, Peter Livingstone, who was acting in execution of duty. He pleaded not guilty to those two charges.
Rampersaud admitted to spitting in a public place, but claimed that he did not know it was an offence.
He further told the court that he was cleaning in front of his business place when the police passed and saw him.
He said that the officer took him into custody but he never resisted arrest, nor abused the officer with words.
However, Police Prosecutor Seetaram, told the court that on the day in question, the defendant was in the Stabroek Market sweeping and the police saw him spitting. He was told of the offence and he began to use a series of abusive words against the officer. He was subsequently taken to the City Constabulary.
Rampersaud was placed on a bond to keep the peace for nine months in relation to spitting in a public place.
On the other two charges, he was placed on $10,000 bail each and ordered to make another court appearance on July 10.
