Government may be considering utilising waste materials as an alternative source of energy in the face of the rising cost of fuel.
This was hinted by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Kellawan Lall, last Wednesday.
His disclosure came during the signing ceremony between the Ministry and Puran Brothers, for the closure of the Le Repentir dumpsite and the construction of access roads to facilitate the process.
According to the Minister, even as the plans to close the current dump and open another at Haags Bosch take shape, the focus will not only be on the collection and disposal of waste. He said that new dimensions will be introduced.
Minister Lall said that many people worldwide are highlighting the concept of other sources of energy because of the rising cost of fossil fuel, which in recent days experienced a price spike again.
He said that while people may have to live with this development, “We cannot live with inactivity and not deal with the issue of alternative sources of energy.”
Lall emphasised that technological moves have already proven that waste is undoubtedly a source of creating new forms of energy.
Another dimension of dealing with waste matter, the Minister said, will see the accentuation of the recycling process.
He explained that a lot of resources that go into the primary products that are eventually disposed of, will not be allowed to waste wherever possible.
And even as measures are being put in place to close the Le Repentir landfill site before opening the Haags Bosch site, Minister Lall revealed that plans are also apace to address the problem of waste in various parts of the country.
“The amount and type of waste being generated and the manner in which some Guyanese choose to dispose of their waste are all very important issues that we have to grapple with,” said the Minister.
The Ministry of Local Government, he said, has started a programme whereby efforts are being made to identify landfill sites in various areas to accommodate waste. This move is being done through the local authorities as the responsibility lies with them to deal with garbage, the Minister noted.
He said that there have already been some successes in this regard in the Corentyne. Recently, another site was identified at Anna Regina to deal with waste on the Essequibo Coast.
