The driver of the car that killed 56-year-old John France, is currently in police custody.
According to sources close to the investigation, the woman who is a young mother, turned herself in to the police on Thursday.
This newspaper was told that the woman secured the services of a lawyer on Thursday, and presented herself at the Ruimveldt Police Station. Up to press time yesterday, the woman was still being held at the East La Penitence Police Station. Sources say that the woman is an unlicensed driver.
Charges are likely to be laid shortly.
On Friday last, France known as ‘Early Bird’, of Lot 5 Henry Street, Werk-en-Rust, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after he was struck by a car which was allegedly driven by the woman.
Another man, Anthony Paul, 21, sustained a fractured right leg in the mishap.
A niece of the dead man had told Kaieteur News that France had attended a funeral shortly before his demise.
Initial reports are that Paul was standing on the Broad Street parapet and France was sitting on a pile of lumber near him, when the car which the woman was driving, turned from Ketley Street into Broad Street at a fast rate and struck them.
