Thirty-five-year-old Marlon Braithwaite, of Bare Root Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable offence of murder, when he appeared before Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, yesterday.
It was alleged that the accused, on June 10 last, at Bare Root Bachelors Adventure, killed Sharmine Mc Kay.
Braithwaite, who claimed that he was awaiting the arrival of his attorney, Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos, stood expressionless in the courtroom. His lawyer was a long time in coming. Up to the time Braithwaite was being escorted from the courtroom, the lawyer had not showed up.
Braithwaite is accused of stabbing his reputed wife, Sharmine Mc Kay, last week Wednesday night at the couple’s home.
Mc Kay succumbed to her injuries on Monday last at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
She sustained stab wounds to the head and hand, and abrasions to the face and
arms. Mc Kay had told this newspaper that Braithwaite had also poured kerosene down her throat.
According to a relative who was at the hospital on Monday evening, Mc Kay was still complaining of some discomfort.
“Although they tek out de blade from she belly, Sharmine was still crying out for this burning sensation in her stomach, and we ask de nurse and she told us that she was being treated for that,” the relative explained.
Mc Kay was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, by neighbours who discovered her lying in a pool of blood on her front steps soon after the stabbing.
Neighbours said that after discovering Mc Kay, they quickly wrapped her with pieces of cloth and rushed her to the hospital.
As the neighbours were attempting to lift the injured woman off the steps, Mc Kay turned and asked if they could have taken the knife out of her since it was still lodged in her abdomen.
Neighbours had also told this newspaper that the woman’s clothing and some articles in her home were all soaked with kerosene, prompting them to think that the suspect was attempting to burn the victim and the house.
Mc Kay’s death has added to the growing list of domestic cases which have been spiraling out of control.
