The Ministry of Health received some 30,000 doses of seasonal influenza vaccine from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). While the vaccine does not protect against the H1N1 virus (swine flu), Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said that it is part of the Ministry’s effort to reduce any kind of serious impact it would have.
“This vaccine does not protect against H1N1 virus. However the virus in a healthy person is a mild to moderate type of influenza, but in a person with other infections, H1N1 will have a more serious impact.”
He explained that his Ministry is making sure that certain vulnerable populations are protected against other types of influenza.
“If H1N1 comes to our country, we would not have these vulnerable populations at risk. So we are trying to create a healthier environment.”
Since the Ministry cannot vaccinate the entire nation, certain vulnerable groups have been identified to be vaccinated and these include children under five years, the elderly population, and any Guyanese if they have some serious illness.
