Members of Mon Repos Masjid take executive to court

Five members of the Mon Repos Sunnatul Jamaat on the East Coast of Demerara have filed a motion in the High Court against the executive body of the Masjid to force them to produce a financial audit statement outlining the amount of money they collected on behalf of the mosque and how much is actually being spent on the upkeep of the place of worship.
Those summoned to the High Court include the President of the Masjid, Mohammed Khan; the secretary D. Rahat, and executive members, Ashmeed Mohamed, Rasheed Rahaman and Azim Bacchus.
Mohammed Alli, on behalf of the plaintiffs, told Kaieteur News yesterday that he along with four other members of the Mosque decided to take the executive body to court, due to the fact that they have been pleading with them to produce a financial statement for the years 2003 to 2009 on the amount of money being spent, but to date, the executive body has refused to do so.
The matter is scheduled to be called in the High Court on August 17, 2009.
“Once you spend people’s money, you must show some accountability…Islam speaks highly about accountability,” Mohammed Alli said.
Alli is of the view that the President of the Masjid along with the executive body are abusing the funds they collect from persons.
He explained that on most occasions, persons are being paid by the executive body when they do not do their jobs.
The affidavit by Alli stated that the President of the Masjid ordered that cards be issued to each member of the Masjid requiring a payment of $500 per month.
It was also noted that the executive body began the business of renting wares to the members for functions and events. According to the affidavit, it is true that improvements have been made to the Mosque and surrounding areas but on each occasion, such improvements were financed by separate donations from members of the Masjid, and others who reside out of Guyana.
Alli said that although it was agreed at the Annual General Meeting of the Mosque in 2002 that the legal firm of Mc Doom and Associates be employed to draft a constitution for the Jamaat, none was done so far, as it was revealed that the firm was never approached by the executive body to draft the constitution.
It was also agreed at the meeting that the Jamaat be registered as a Friendly Society with the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, but it was found that the Mosque was never registered nor had any application made for such registration.
