“We are going to have a team that is going to participate with some degree of success and I really believe that we can hold our own against any of the other teams in the NAWIRA Under-19 Tournament,” President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Noel Adonis told Kaieteur Sport yesterday, at the National Park.
Adonis was observing one of the sessions, when he said that from all the reports and what he has seen personally, he is quite satisfied with the level of commitment from the players and expects a much better showing from them this time around.
“Recently they’ve had a few trial matches and it was clear that there have been lots of improvement, especially the movements with and without the ball, the tackling, and the players are all supporting each other,” Adonis recognised.
He disclosed that the coaching staff headed by Laurie Adonis and assisted by Theodore Henry and Cornel Millington has been doing an excellent job in helping to prepare the team, adding that at present they are working on improving the skills and individual competency of the players.
“Over the next two weeks, they will move to imparting how to make the best decisions during the game, while engaging them in indoor sessions during which time they will learn how to read referees signals among other related rules of the game.
According to Adonis, the next two weeks will be crucial as it is during that time that the team will be reduced and the final squad selected.
The most important attribute of the players is their willingness to learn, a feature which Adonis described as fundamental to becoming a good player.
Speaking of the current difficulty being experienced, the GRFU Head said that procuring the necessary funding continues to be a worry, but was optimistic that due to the string of outstanding performances over the years, sponsors would be more inclined to offer their support.
“I think our performances over the years and what we’ve been doing with rugby will be enough to impress potential sponsors.”
He added that getting the team to the tournament is essential, since it is from this level that the Union usually gets its feeder for the senior team.
Guyana finished fourth in last year’s competition, which was won by the Cayman Islands and according to Adonis they will be hoping to do even better this year, quickly referring to last year’s performance as an aberration.
