The North American contingent of the Guyana Under-20 National team arrived Wednesday in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos ready to participate in the Football Festival, joining the contingent from Guyana who arrived on Monday.
The players were met by several officials of the Turks & Caicos Football Association, including General Secretary Sonia Beine and Technical Director Matthew Greene.
The team settled into the Comfort Inn and Suites and had their first training session later in the day at the National Football stadium, where dozens of spectators including Guyanese residents in there showed up to witness the training.
Guyana kicked off the tournament with a Game yesterday at 7:40 pm versus a Turks & Caicos Select Team. That game was to be preceded by the T&C Under-20 National team versus Betheseda SC, the number one women’s team from Maryland, USA.
According to coach, Mark Rodrigues, Wednesday’s session was to evaluate the players to determine their skill levels and strengths, which would assist the coaching staff in determining the best system of play.
After the session Ashley Rodrigues and Briana DeSousa were selected as co-captains because of the leadership skills shown.
The coaching staff was very excited as they were able to identify a core group of players that would immediately impact the squad, and aid in building the future for the GFF Women.
Head of the GFF women’s football in Guyana Ms. Vanessa Dickenson indicated her excitement at what she witnessed during training, citing the tremendous benefits for the players, and felt it would be important for the technical staff to visit Guyana in the near future to impart their knowledge.
The coaching staff spoke with the Guyanese and Turks & Caicos players about College Scholarship opportunities following their training session.
