Commissioner of Police Henry Greene on Sunday delivered on a promise he had made on Independence Day during the playing off of the Charles ‘Wheels’ Henry one day independence volleyball competition, held at the GTM hard court in New Amsterdam.
The Top Cop had made an on the spot decision to present the winning team with a sum of $100,000 and a set of uniforms.
On Sunday he delivered on that promise at a simple presentation ceremony held at the Destiny Guinness Bar at Main and Lad Lane New Amsterdam, during the staging of the Charles ‘Wheels’ Henry cycle race.
In delivering remarks the Commissioner congratulated the club for being successful and called on them to continue their good work and to make good use of the cash and wear the uniform with dignity.
He wants them to expand their membership to include a youth section for both sexes.
He said as Commissioner of Police he is always willing to get involved in community activities and stated that it is the direction he wants the force to go.
Activities of such nature will build camaraderie and augur well for police community relationship.
Mr. Greene called on members of the Guyana Police Force to get involved in productive activities and reminisced on his days as a young police officer, when he participated in many disciplines and noted that B division had teams that competed with the best.

Commander of B Division, Assistant Commissioner George Vyphuis, who chaired the proceedings, also congratulated the winning team but warned them to be aware and tread lightly, because the police would be playing in the next competition and will be coming with all guns blazing.
Commander Vyphuis assured the Commissioner that B division will continue to lead the way. He noted already, the establishment of a number of youth clubs and scout groups in the division and they will soon be once again participating in most of the sport disciplines and other community activities in Berbice, while not losing the focus of the Guyana Police Force.
Captain of the Rollers Volleyball Club, Seon Wilson, in receiving the gifts thanked the Commissioner and assured him that the cash and uniforms will be used productively for the benefit of the club and the community.
Other persons at the event were Mayor Claude Henry, former Mayor Errol Alphonso, Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha, Superintendents of Police Simon Mc Bean and Traffic officer Owen Trotz, businessman Mike Fung and GTM Berbice Regional Branch Manager Elwin Jones.
Overseas based Charles Henry, who was a national volleyball player in the 1970s and 80s and also participated in a number of other sporting disciplines, thanked the Top Cop and other officials for taking time out from their busy schedule to help make the tournament a success.
Henry who was a founding member of the Rollers Volleyball Club also thanked the players and fans for coming out and showing their appreciation for what was done.
He expressed pleasure at being able to give back something to his country and promised to continue to assist wherever he could.
