Minister Kellawan Lall (at right) hands over the keys to the two vehicles to Chief Constable, Gail George.
The policing operation of the City Constabulary is expected to be significantly boosted with the recent addition of two spanking new vehicles.
In recognition of the fact that the Constabulary is tasked with the major role of policing the city to ensure that the bylaws are adhered to, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development procured the vehicles.
Yesterday Minister Kellawan Lall handed over the vehicles, each valued at $3M to Chief Constable, Gail George.
The endowment to the municipality represents a promise made by President Bharrat Jagdeo a few months ago when he announced Government’s decision to provide City Hall with a monthly $10M support for 12 months.
The government had also provided the municipality with some computers to aid its Information Technology programme.
According to Minister Lall, the policing of the city bylaws is a very important aspect of the work of the municipality through its constabulary unit.
It was for this reason, he said, that a bicycle squad was created some time ago to assist the enforcement process. He said that over the years the council as well as the government has had problems dealing with recalcitrant.
“People have been doing all kinds of different things in the city, not only disposing of waste in an improper manner but also squatting, selling on the roadside and blocking up the walk way and other businesses…”
And the constabulary, the Minister said, must play a key and initial important role to prevent such situations from festering in the city.
He stressed the notion that nobody should work and/or live in the city without adhering to the city bylaws.
With the aid of the vehicles he highlighted that officers of the constabulary will be able to patrol sections of the city with ease, even as he warned that the vehicles be used for no other purpose.
“I hope that these vehicles are not used for administrative purposes but for the purpose that we intended them, that is, for the constabulary to be mobile and to go around the city and see to it that people do not do things against the bylaws.”
And the vehicles will no doubt enhance the constabulary’s patrol, the Chief Constable disclosed.
“I know that with this donation we will be able to go to the extreme… like in Cummings Lodge, South Ruimveldt and Agricola we have not been able to focus on as we would like,” she noted.
