…plane specially retrofitted with auto pilot, state of the art locater beacon
Chairman of the Roraima Group of Companies that includes Roraima Airways, Captain Gerry Gouveia, yesterday unveiled to his employees and the members of the media, to a $60M Britten Norman BN2A-27 Islander that has been added to its fleet.
According to Gouveia, while there is the ongoing global economic recession happening, he believes that Guyana is on the threshold of great things.
“I think we need to believe in the future, we need to keep persevering.”
He noted that this is what his group of companies has been doing ever since its establishment some 17 years ago.
He said that it was not just him who was expanding, “but all the other operators at Ogle and there are a lot of businessmen in Guyana who continue to invest and expand their business, because we believe in the future of Guyana.”
Commenting on the acquisition of the aircraft, Gouveia said that if one were to analyze the aviation industry, locally, there is a demand given the developments of mining, agriculture and tourism among others.
He said that there are many instances where the company could not satisfy the demands of, “people wanting to go to Kaieteur Falls, to Rupununi,” miners and hinterland residents among others.
At centre, Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad congratulates Cpt Gouveia on his acquisition.
He emphasised that the acquisition of the new plane is particularly to meet with the increased demands.
The plane was acquired in part as a result of a loan from the Republic Bank whose managing director, Edwin Gooding, was on hand for the launch. Gooding told the gathering that the bank was pleased to be associated with projects that aid in the national development of the country.
The Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander is a British light utility aircraft, mainline airliner and cargo aircraft, designed and manufactured by Britten-Norman of the United Kingdom. The Islander is regarded as one of the best selling commercial aircraft types produced in Europe, with over 750 still in service with in excess of 100 commercial operators around the world.
The aircraft is also used by the Army and police in the United Kingdom and is a popular light transport with over 30 military aviation operators around the world.
Roraima Airways has been operating Islanders for in excess of 15 years, providing air support to the international community, mining community, residents, and businessmen of the interior.
Roraima also conducts international commercial air transport operations in South America and the Caribbean, the most noteworthy being a FEDEX Express contract, transporting cargo five times weekly to Piarco Int’l Airport, Trinidad.
The new aircraft, which originated in Isle of Wight, UK, was specially retrofitted, and includes the installation of an autopilot, High Frequency Radio, and 406Mhz Emergency Locator Transmitter to further enhance safety.
The plane arrived Saturday evening after flying for some 6000 nautical miles.
