An Inspector of Police is currently being treated at the Suddie Hospital for a stab wound to his chest, which he sustained at the hands of an inmate of the New Opportunity Corps.
While reports are still sketchy, this newspaper was told that the teen, who had recently escaped from the NOC, and was recaptured, was being held at the Suddie Police Station to assist with investigations into another matter.
Some time yesterday, while the inmate was at the station, he had a confrontation with another man. This led to a scuffle between the inmate and the man.
The Inspector of Police at that point tried intervening and was stabbed in the chest.
He was rushed to the Suddie Hospital by his colleagues, where he was treated and subsequently admitted. Up to press time yesterday, his condition was listed as critical but stable.
Over recent times, residents and law enforcement officers on the Essequibo Coast have been airing their concern over the inmates at the NOC, who all seem to be out of control.
In recent times, there has been an increase in the number of escapees from the facility.
In addition, residents along the coast had expressed the view that it was some of the same escapees who remain at large, are the ones responsible for criminal activities in their communities.
Residents also complained about the seemly poor security measures that are currently in place at the facility.
