Plans for the further improvement of the education sector were unveiled by Education Minister, Shaik Baksh, when he addressed a gathering of head teachers at the Queen’s College Auditorium, yesterday.
The forum was held under the theme ‘Strategies, Measures, Innovations and challenges for education development and outcomes’. It was designed to be an interactive session. Technical Facilitator, Olato Sam, was the designated moderator of the forum.
According to Minister Baksh, yesterday’s proceedings represented one of the largest gatherings of school managers of nursery, primary and secondary schools within the Education Districts Three, Four and Georgetown, since he became Minister just over two years ago.
“This comes at a time when it is obligatory to let you know what we have been doing, what progress we have made and to chart the way forward and in all of this you are our partners,” the Minister told the professionals.
Minister Baksh pointed to the fact that the sector cannot succeed in terms of its vision, unless the heads of institutions are fully on board with the endeavours proposed. The support of all teachers is also crucial to the accomplishments of the sector, the minister emphasised.
It is for this reason, Minister Baksh said that the forum was geared to serve as a review of what is occurring in the system, such as the changes and transformation; the reform agenda that the Ministry has embarked upon.
He said that over the years, it has been recognised that fora such as workshops and consultations are essential parts of the Ministry’s programme to achieve quality education in the system.
In terms of strategies, he noted that efforts have already been made to complete the education strategic plan, adding that the main strategy for the sector is in fact the delivery of quality education.
“When I say quality education I do not only mean academic performance at our various examinations and assessments, but also that we must be able to produce the kind of Guyanese that can make a contribution to national development.”
He added that the sector must train and educate the population and promote values of harmony and tolerance as intrinsic values of the education system.
The sector must therefore be in a position to help every citizen realise his potential, the Minister said.
“If we fail in doing those things, then we would have failed our country.
Too many of our children are being left behind.”
According to the Minister, there are serious challenges confronting the sector that can only be addressed with a vibrant partnership approach if success is to become a reality.
It was against this background that the interactive forum, which attracted Minister within the Ministry, Dr Desrey Fox and Permanent Secretary, Phulander Khandi, among other senior officials, was set into motion yesterday.
