It took an inspiring run from the defence by Aderemi Simon, a perfectly squared pass across the goalmouth by Ivor Thompson and an opportunistic finish from John Abrahams to relieve the agony of Old Fort fans during their 2-2 draw with Hikers last Friday.
It was not the ideal result for a team currently dwelling at the bottom of the points table and it further decreased their chances of vying for top honours in this year’s Farfan & Mendes Men’s First Division Competition.
Hikers on the other hand lead the standings with a win and two draws for a total of five points from three matches, while GCC have four points from two games after securing a win and a draw and Old Fort a single point from three matches.
The eagerly anticipated clash, which Old Fort had stated fans was going to see a resurrection of the team’s desire to win matches did appear to be going to script as they took an early lead, when Dwight McCalman got onto the end of a pinpoint pass from Dwayne Alleyne, before hammering a shot past Hikers’ Azad De Abreu stationed between the uprights. That goal came in the opening minute of play.
The two teams created chances, but poor finishing at both ends kept the score-line close with Old Fort clinging to a 1-0 advantage.
Four minutes from the half, Jerazeno Bell, who returned to the forward line after playing in defence for the two earlier matches, got the equaliser when he hit a powerful shot from the top of the circle past a transfixed Mikhail Smith, who seemed surprised by the strike.
The teams remained deadlocked at the break.
In the second session, once again the forwards on both sides missed clear cut chances with Abrahams and Hikers Robert France, the chief culprits.
Abrahams on two occasions failed to beat De Abreu from close range, while France, who is always deadly in the box failed to even get a touch onto passes from Timothy McIntosh and Bell.
Shane Samuels eventually broke the stalemate when he delivered a screamer from just inside the box that Smith had no chance of saving. It came in the 42nd minute.
With time slipping away, Simon took matters into his own hands with some mesmerising runs from the defence, but time and again failed to get the support from the strikers.
He was eventually rewarded when one such run saw him deliver a pass to Thompson playing on the opposite side of the pitch and after dribbling two defenders found a waiting Abrahams who tucked the ball into an open goal to level the scores.
It remained that way until the end.
The competition continues tomorrow weather permitting with Hikers taking on Old Fort, at the same venue.
