The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has scrapped their Guatemala tour for the Latin American Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships, which would have been used as a qualifier for the World Championships.
Guyana was expected to compete in the Under-15 boys and girls’ team events subsequent to the country’s participation at the recent Caribbean Cadet and Junior competitions that was held in St Kitts and Nevis earlier this year.
“We had to pull out at the last minute because of exams. After we realised that exams are near, we didn’t go ahead with it,” national table tennis coach, Linden Johnson confirmed with Kaieteur Sport yesterday afternoon.
Stephon Patoir, Denzil Duff, Delon Mahadeo and Samuel Fraser had made it in the boys’ Under-15 team contest, while Adielle Rosheuvel, Chelsea Edghill and Akiecia Nedd were to compete in the girls’ Under-15 team competition.
Trenace Lowe was the only player to qualify in the women’s singles category with Nigel Bryan and Denzil Hopkinson being issued wildcard entries.
However, hopes were dashed with the announcement that they will not participate.
The World Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships are slated for Columbia. Efforts to reach GTTA General Secretary, Godfrey Munroe proved futile yesterday.
