Overseas-based Guyanese and former National volleyball stalwart and cyclist Charles ‘Wheels’ Henry in collaboration with the Flying Ace Cycling club of New Amsterdam, former Mayor and businessman Errol Alphonso and the Guinness Bar on Main and Lad Lane New Amsterdam, has organised a 40 miles cycle road for today in Berbice.
The event, which is open only to Berbicians, pedals off at 08:00 from Main and Lad Lane, proceed to Adventure on the Corentyne Coast and back to the starting point for the finish.
There are a number of attractive incentives that will be on offer for the outstanding participants, including those for the top six finishers, along with the outstanding, veterans, juveniles, BMX, upright and female riders.
The cyclists will also be gunning for the eight sprint point prizes that are on offer.
Commissioner of Police Henry Greene and Director of prisons Dale Erskine along with Mr. Henry will send the cyclist on their way and be on hand to distribute the prizes at the end of the race.
Among other prominent persons who would be on hand to assist with the prize giving exercise, which takes place at the Guinness Bar, are former Mayor Errol Alphonso, Mayor Claude Henry, commander of Police B division Assistant Commissioner George Vyphuis, B Division Crime and Traffic officers, superintendents Marlon Chapman and Owen Trotz and prominent attorney-at-law Mursuline Bacchus.
The commissioner of Police will take the opportunity to hand over the promised $100,000 and a set of uniforms to the Rollers Volleyball Club that won the recently held Charles Henry Independence competition held in New Amsterdam.
Charles Henry is a former National volleyball player that dominated the game in the late 70s and 80s and also participated in a number of other disciplines. He now resides in the United States, and since his return to here for a holiday, has been organising a number of community-base activities. He has pledged to help revive some of those sport disciplines that have once made Guyana proud during his playing days.
