A fine all round performance from Surujnarine Kandasammy led JC Chandisingh to a massive 9 wicket victory over Berbice High School in the final of the Berbice Kool Kids Inter Secondary 20/20 cricket tournament.
Playing at the Area ‘H’ ground in front of a large and colourful crowd, Kandasammy took 2 for 12 and hit an unbeaten 25 as his team were crowned champions in the 2nd edition of the tournament.
Berbice High school were invited to take 1st strike after losing the toss and got off to a solid start as openers Shemron Hetymer and Hardat Singh added 31 in 6 overs before Singh was bowled by off spinner Norman Mangar for 8. With JCCSS employing a 5 man attack, the BHS batsmen struggled to get the ball away and soon found themselves in trouble at 44 for 5 in the 11 overs as Hetymer 23 (3×4), Royston Duggin 1, Brandon Balkissoon 1 and Cledwin Cort 2 fell to spinners Loyden Lewis and Kandasammy. With overs running out, the remaining batsmen tried to up the tempo but failed as BHS were bowled out for 63 in 18.1 overs. Apart from Hetymer, only captain Udesh Imrit reached double figures with 11.
Bowling for JCCSS Kandasammy had figures of 4-1-12-2 while Loyden Lewis took 2 for 11 and Norman Mangar 2 for 16.
In reply JCCSS needing to score at just overs 3 runs were given an opening partnership of 63 in 16 overs by openers Arif Chan and Kandasammy. Both batsman applied themselves well and ran brilliantly between the wicket as the BHS bowled well but without penetration.
Chan was eventually bowled by pacer Judason Bess at 63 for 1 for a well played 24 with one boundary. NO.63 batsman Karamchan Mohabali joined Kandasammy and together they took JCCSS home ending at 66 for 1. Mohabali ended on 2 while Kandasammy was on 25 with 3 boundaries. Bess, the only successful BHS bowler ended with 1 for 15 in 4 overs.
At the presentation ceremony, CEO/Secretary of the RHTYSC hailed the 2009 Kool Kids tournament as huge success with several new and exciting talents coming forth. He stated that 16 teams took part in the tournament and the standard was high throughout. The club, the Secretary noted, used the tournament to promote the Say Yes to Education and No to Drugs Message.
He expressed gratitude to the Guyana Beverage Company for the sponsorship and their continued confidence in his club’s ability to organise such events. General Manager of the sponsors, Mr. Robert Selman, expressed his delight at the high standard of cricket he witnessed in the finals.
Mr. Selman stated that his company was committed to sports development in Guyana and challenged the young cricketers to be disciplined at all times, while staying in school to obtain an education. He expressed his pleasure at the organising skills of the RHTYSC and pledged to continue sponsorship in the future.
Kandasammy received a cricket bat for being man-of-the-final and a pair of batting pads for being the best batsman. Lloydel Lewis also received a pair of batting pads for the best bowling figures in the final.
JCCSS took home $60,000 in cricket gear, $90,000 in educational material and $20,000 worth of internal sports equipment. Berbice High School received $35,000 worth of cricket gears, $90,000 in educational material.
