Two months after the bullet-riddled bodies of Romeo and Clint De Agrella were found at the Iron Punt, North West District foreshore, police have detained two men and are looking for a former policeman in connection with what is believed to be a drug-related double murder.
Yesterday, police issued a wanted bulletin for ex-cop Sean Belfield, called “Backup”, in connection with the murder of the father and son, whose bodies were found in the Pomeroon River on March 23, last.
A police official also confirmed that they had detained two other people for the double murder. One of the men is said to be a former police rank.
According to the official, based on information provided by the men, an arrest warrant was subsequently issued for Belfield. Charges are likely.
Sources close to the investigation said that the case broke after a Pomeroon resident indicated that he knew the identity of the killers.
On March 23, the bodies of Romeo De Agrella, 41, and his 20-year-old son, Clint De Agrella, both of Pomeroon, were found in the Atlantic Ocean near Iron Punt.
Clint De Agrella sustained bullet wounds to the head, while his 41-year-old father was shot in the back.
A warhead police retrieved indicated that the killer(s) had used an assault rifle.
The De Agrellas were reportedly returning from Venezuela when they were slain.
Police had detained a nephew who found the bullet-riddled boat and also took Mr. De Agrella’s wife into custody for a day.
Both were subsequently released.
On December 4, 2002, while still a serving member of the Force, Belfield, along with self-confessed drug kingpin Shaheed Roger Khan and Haroon Yahya, were held at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara with sophisticated electronic equipment and arms and ammunition.
However, they were not convicted.
Also in February 2006, Belfield’s four year-old daughter, Tiffany Belfield, was kidnapped from the Kingston Nursery School. She was however dropped off at her parent’s Lamaha Gardens home a few days after a $5M ransom was reportedly paid.
In June that year, Belfield, ex-policemen Paul Rodrigues and Lloyd Roberts, along with Roger Khan, were held in Suriname.
Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Sean Belfield is asked to contact the police on telephone numbers 225-6411, 225-2700, 226-2917, 225-8196,
