Old Fort enter today’s second round clash against Hikers in this year’s Farfan & Mendes First Division Men’s Hockey Competition, with the full knowledge that they must win to stay in contention, after losing both of their matches in the opening round.
To this end the team underwent some strenuous practice sessions recently at the Tucville ground, with the aim of rectifying the problems that surfaced during the two encounters and one senior member disclosed that many of the issues have been resolved and fans can look forward to more determined performances in upcoming games.
Senior player Ivor Thompson in an invited comment said, that what they found was that the team’s approach in the last game revealed that they clearly did not make the adjustment from the indoor setup to the outdoor format, but the players now seemed more focused and ready to reverse the team’s fortunes.
“We were able to work on a few areas that we felt needed to be improved such as being more accurate on penalty corners and moving the ball around, especially when in the circle instead of individuals attempting to dribble a host of defenders, which often times proved difficult and resulted in lost possession,” Thompson related.
According to him the mood in the team is positive and every player has promised to fully commit to earning a win and much needed points.
Thompson added that apart from him, the team will be relying on the services of stalwarts such as Gavin Hope, Wayne St. Jules and Dexter Wyles to guide the younger generation that include the silky Aderemi Simon, his brother Askofu, John Abrahams, Christopher Low-Koan, Dwayne Alleyne, Dwight Sullivan and Jason De Santos.
Goalkeeper Mikhail Smith has performed admirably since assuming the first choice role in the absence of Tony Cole, who is residing overseas, while the supporting cast of Michael Jack, Compton Dolphin, Adrian Brandt, Robert Hussain and Michael Hawke must be able to add some venom to the team’s quest for victory.
Meanwhile, Hikers will be strengthened by the inclusion of inspirational coach/player, Timothy McIntosh and goalkeeper Azad DeAbreu, who were both absent for the first two games.
Their inclusion would no doubt bolster the chances of Hikers maintaining their dominance of Old Fort, but more importantly the game should turn out to be a scorcher.
Apart from those two, star player Jerazeno Bell, who had filled the void in defence due to the unavailability of McIntosh and last stop DeAbreu, will return to his usual forward role where he can display his ball wizardry, while Robert France, Randy Hope and Shane Samuels can expect the passes to be more clinical.
The experience of Devin Munroe is always crucial in the Hikers line-up, while the fast developing Shaquille Assanah could provide a stern test for the Old Fort backline.
For the record, Hikers won the previous encounter 2-1.
The two teams will be chosen from: (Old Fort) – Christopher Low Koan, Dwight Sullivan, Jason De Santos, Aderemi Simon, Askofu Simon, John Abrahams, Ivor Thompson, Wayne St. Jules, Dexter Wyles, Dwayne Alleyne, Gavin Hope, Mikhail Smith, Michael Jack, Robert Hussain, Dwight McCalman, Michael Hawke, Compton Dolphin and Adrian Brandt; (Hikers)- (Goal Keeper)Azad De Abreu, (Defence)- Robert Fernandes, Brian Asregado, Sheldon Corlette, Timothy McIntosh, Rene Edwards, (Mid Field)-Devin Munroe, Alex Gouveia, Shane Samuels, Randy Hope, (Forward) – Robert France, Shaquille Assanah and Jerazeno Bell.
