– had qualified for half marathon
Alika Morgan was yesterday added to the national contingent for next month’s Caribbean Games when the Athletics Association of Guyana discovered that she had made the grade and was eligible for the Women’s Half Marathon.
President of the athletics association, Colin Boyce told Kaieteur Sport that the association had gone into its database ahead of yesterday’s deadline for submission of national teams to ensure that no one was being omitted unfairly.
He said that it was discovered, when they ran the checks, the national Sports Woman of the Year had qualified for the half marathon race at the Caribbean Games when she ran last year at the University of the West Indies.
Morgan apparently ran 1:27.00 that was better than the 1:30.00 now required. Initially, no qualification mark was set for the event where ‘No Standard’ appeared next to the criteria in the first qualification and standards document.
However, this newspaper was informed that that has since changed and both the male and female half marathon races now require qualification times. Submission of entries closed at midnight last night without any known adjustment.
The qualification time in the male race is 1:20.00 and Lionel D’Andrade, who was vocal about his capacity to run 1:10.00, was left off the athletics team. The athlete was hoping that he could have initially squeezed through.
The revised qualification document dashed D’Andrade’s dreams. Kelvin Johnson and his previous training partner, Cleveland Forde will run the distance races for Guyana. Eight athletes have been submitted for the competition.
The eight athletes are Morgan (half marathon), Marian Burnett (800m), Aliann Pompey (400m), Adam Harris (100, 200m), Jeremy Bascom (100m), Lee Prowell (200m), Forde (1500m and 5000m) and Johnson (10000m).
