Dear Editor,
The only time Guyana won a Regional Under-9 Championship in Jamaica was 1996, under the stewardship of Vishal Nagamootoo.
Thirteen years later another wicketkeeper from the ancient county is tipped to lead the Land of Many Waters.
If Anthony Bramble is trusted with the captaincy he would become the second keeper to achieve the feat since (1970), Guyana quest for Regional Under-19 honours in Jamaica began in 1971 under the captaincy of fast bowling all rounder Sydney Matthews.
Although the Timur Mohamed-led side defeated Jamaica by 10 wickets at Sabina’s Park in 1976 to capture the Benson & Hedges Trophy; that was only one match after competing in the preliminaries in Guyana.
The Land of Many Waters returned to Reggae Country for Regional Under-19 honours again in 1983 under the captaincy of Vinoo Solomon and was eliminated in the preliminaries.
Four years later Michael Howard’s men failed to win a match and finished that tournament last and during the 1991 Championship in Jamaica Guyana give a good account of themselves, but failed to bring the bacon home.
Arjune Nandu was the man wearing the captaincy arm band.
Vishal Nagamootoo ended the Reggae drought in 1996 when Guyana won the Northern Telecoms Trophy. Since then Guyana Under-19 cricketers have returned from Jamaica empty handed.
Sauid Drepaul’s men failed to qualify for the semi-finals in 2002, Guyana under Zamal Khan’s captaincy suffered the same faith two years later in 2004, but Bramble, who like Nagamootoo is no rabbit with the bat, will be trying to better his predecessor’s record as the Guyanese with the highest score as a wicketkeeper in Regional Under-19 cricket since 1970.
Vishal’s 96 against the Windward Islands in Grenada during the 1995 Northern Telecoms Tournament, will surely be on Bramble’s mind along with the Biennial ICC Under-19 World Cup slatted for the next year.
Bramble would love to emulate Vishal by becoming the second Guyanese Glovesman for the West Indies at the Under-19 Level to perform such a feat.
Only time will tell if this Bramble could ramble. I don’t think is first name is Livingstone!
