Guyanese karatekas, 3rd Dan Instructor Ganesh Babulall and Green Belt Victor Burnett returned home last Tuesday, after registering creditable performances at the Tiger Claw International Championships in Trinidad and Tobago.
The two from the Guyana Amateur Karate Association, though not winning the individual Kumite, Kata and Weapon Kata categories, finished in the Top 10 and have been invited to return to the island to compete in the next ‘Champion of Champions’ Tournament scheduled for November.
The 15 year-old Burnett, who attends the Institute of Business Education placed 3rd in the 14-15 years Kumite Division, 4th in the Kata category and also earned a medal in the Open Hand Kata in his first appearance overseas to be ranked in the Top 10 among 30 –plus competitors.
Burnett, who has been involved in the sport for the past three years, said that even though he is relatively inexperienced in overseas competitions, he felt comfortable and really enjoyed the event and was hoping to do even better the next time.
He extended thanks to his father Sgt. Clenford Burnett, who made the trip possible.
Instructor Babulall, who has participated in numerous tournaments abroad, dating back to 1999, returned home with a silver medal in Kata and Kumite and a 4th place in the Weapon Kata to crown a solid all-round performance.
He was also presented with an Appreciation Plaque, after performing well in the Block Breaking segment.
According to Babulall, countries such as Barbados, Canada, USA, St. Lucia, along with the host nation competed in the tournament.
Babulall told Kaieteur Sport that he now has his sights set on participating at the World National Championships slated for next month in the USA.
The 3rd Dan karateka, however, bemoaned the fact that many other students could not attend the tournament due to sponsorship constraints.
He too extended gratitude to all those who supported him via sponsorship.
