More than 100 residents of two Berbice communities were beneficiaries of the expertise of the Guyana Defence Force medical corps as part of the army’s ‘Hearts and Minds’ programme.
This programme is aimed at enhancing and maintaining relationships with communities throughout Guyana.
From May 29 to May 31, the medical corps conducted an Outreach Programme for residents of Calcuni settlement and Coomacka Waterfront on the Berbice River.
According to a press release from Camp Ayanganna, 118 persons were treated for various illnesses. These included peptic ulcers, arthritis, skin disorders, hypertension, influenza, fungal and urinary tract infections.
Additionally, testing was conducted for diabetes and pregnancy.
Nineteen persons were counseled and tested for HIV while several dental procedures including extractions and fillings were completed.
Meanwhile, 131 mini dental kits were distributed and $200,000 worth of pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies were donated to the Calcuni Health Centre and the St. Thomas Primary School at Coomacka.
Medex Johnson and Ms. Mackintosh received the donations on behalf of the health centre and the school respectively.
Residents of the communities expressed their appreciation for the gesture.
The release said that the army’s interactions with the citizenry will continue.
