Athletes and teachers pose with their IAAF certificates and jerseys while AAG officials are seated with President, Colin Boyce (centre) and General Secretary, Claude Blackmore (second, left) at Olympic House.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) held a simple Award Ceremony yesterday in celebration of the World Athletics Day that was observed on May 17, with an Age Group competition at Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
President of the athletics association, Colin Boyce, told the relatively small gathering that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is seeking to incorporate more young people into its programmes.
He said that was the primary motivation behind the AAG activity where athletes from the schools competed in five events. Boyce said that the officials were overwhelmed with the participation, but they managed in the end.
“Our officials had a steep task with the amount of participating athletes.
It was challenging, but the AAG rose to the occasion.
I want to give some kudos to those that worked in the Age Group competition especially,” Boyce said.
General Secretary of the athletics body, Claude Blackmore informed that the IAAF had introduced the World Athletics Day, which started in 1996, where Guyana was among the first set of participants. It is a global phenomenon today.
