Dear Editor,
I read in the newspapers that the mother and other relatives of dead ‘chain snatcher’, Gavin Paul, are calling for the shooter to be charged and brought to justice.
What justice? A licensed firearm owner shot a fleeing bandit whose relatives admit that he was involved in robbing people.
It is unfortunate that he died, but the shooter was trying to prevent yet another innocent woman from being robbed barefacedly in broad daylight.
He should be commended for this. The police cannot be at every place at all times, and as such should welcome such assistance from public-spirited citizens, as I’m sure if an armed policeman was there, the result would have been the same.
If this person is charged, it would defeat the very purpose of issuing a firearm licence, as the holder cannot then help prevent innocent folks from getting robbed by these bandits. Why issue a licence then? Allow the bandits to roam free!
A similar incident took place in Suriname some time back, and all the shooter had to do was show his licence to a policeman on the scene. The same should apply here, and let the robbers (and would-be robbers) know that it is high time that honest, hardworking, peace-loving citizens be allowed to walk the streets in peace.
With the emphasis presently on to prevent violence against women, the Ministry of Social Services should give an award to this person. All fair minded citizens should come out in support of this individual, and pay keen attention to how this matter proceeds.
