Rivalry in Under-18 football between the Guiana’s started in 1967, French Guiana, Dutch Guiana (Suriname) and Guyana, competed in Suriname for two trophies donated by Forbes Burnham.
The idea was the brain child of Edward Van Gendersen, who was born in Suriname.
President of the Demerara Secondary Schools Association and former National Player O.T. Donald and then Minister of Education, Mrs. Winifred Gaskin fully incorporated the gesture and the rest is history.
The Land of Many Waters ended a five-year drought in November 1971, lifting the coveted Forbes Burnham trophy for the first time. Guyana playing under the captaincy of Central High School student, Woodrow David Wilson, defeated Suriname one nil behind an Alfred Morrison goal in the first game at GFC Ground and drew the second match nil all at the same venue.
The historical Guyana Under-18 squad was as follows:
Woodrow David Wilson (Captain): Central High
Peter Irvine: Queen’s College
Wayne Fortune: Central High
Gordon Alphonso: Berbice High
Linden Carter: South Georgetown
Gregory Stewart: Seventh Day
Keith Humphrey: Berbice Collegiate
Mark Britton: Queen’s College

The Land of Many Waters surrendered the Forbes Burnham trophy the following year 1972 in Paramaribo, but recaptured the coveted crown 1973 with Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton at the Helm and his Excellency L.F.S Burnham in attendance.
Guyana drew the opening match one all, the goal scorer for the host was Aubrey Warner and in the deciding encounter with six minutes to full time and the score one all, a Vibert Durdy Butts scorcher lifted the Land of Many Waters to a deserving 2-1 victory which sparked wild celebrations at the GFC ground.
