Two US citizens are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, after they were nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri.
Reports are that the two women, Asha Smallwood and Tracy Samuels, were nabbed on Sunday around 10:30 hours, while attempting to board a Delta Airlines Flight heading to the United States of America.
This newspaper was told that ranks of the Police Narcotics branch, found the prohibited substance in Smallwood’s hand luggage.
A source close to the investigation stated that two packets of white powder that appeared to be cocaine, was found hidden in a false compartment of Smallwood’s carry on luggage. Test on the substance revealed that it was indeed cocaine. Sources say the substance weighed some 3.6 kilograms.
The two who were traveling together, were stopped and searched together after ranks noticed them acting in a suspicious manner.
However, despite the fact no cocaine was found in Samuels’ luggage, she was detained after ranks found out that the two were traveling together. Further investigation revealed Smallwood and Samuels only arrived in Guyana on May 31 last, onboard a Delta flight and were heading back to the US when they were held.
Up to press time yesterday, the two women were still in police custody assisting the police with investigations.
