The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) yesterday demanded that the management of the Wales Sugar Estate pay its workers on site with effect from June 13. According to GAWU, some 80 unionised workers, of the approximate 1,800 workforce of Wales Estate, are required to collect their emoluments in Georgetown, since the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) which used to facilitate them, became redundant some four weeks ago.
The Union said that it had made representation to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) for the unionised employees to be paid at the Estate’s location like the other hundreds, but its pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
“The affected workers have to utilise their valuable time to travel across the Demerara River and to provide taxi fares from their earnings to encash their cheques in the city, which is not a safe environment for anyone with cash in one’s pockets,” GAWU stated.
