“I have nothing to prove” – Dr. Ramsammy
The Alliance for Change is calling for the immediate resignation of Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, following scandalous allegations emanating out of the United States of America by former Roger Khan Attorney, Robert Simels.
Simels is alleging that it was Dr Ramsammy who helped to facilitate the purchase of a laptop computer, capable of triangulating and intercepting telephone calls.
Simels also alleges that Dr. Ramsammy assisted in facilitating the training of Khan in the use of the equipment.
According to the AFC Chairman, Khemraj Ramjattan, a Minister of the government must be of the highest integrity.
He noted that in light of the Ramsammy claims, that he was unaware of any basis for Simels’ allegations, then he should at least be willing to immediately submit himself to a polygraph test.
“Not only Custom’s Officers must take polygraph tests.” Ramjattan said.
Ramjattan also pointed out that if Ramsammy was not willing to resign or take the polygraph test, then the electorate must play their part in pressing the authorities to ensure that their Ministers are of the highest integrity.
Asked yesterday if he would submit to a polygraph test as Ramjattan had suggested, Dr Ramsammy said that he has already commented on the Roger Khan issue about the allegations against him, and has nothing to prove.
He declined further comment.
The call by Ramjattan comes on the heels of a renewed call by the main Opposition party, the Peoples National Congress Reform, for an investigation into Khan’s activities and associations in Guyana.
Shadow Home Affairs Minister, Deborah Backer, told media operatives on Friday that Guyanese in general, must put pressure on the government to ensure that an investigation be held into the activities of Roger Khan and his associates here in the country, given the revelations that have been emanating.
The party’s Chief Whip, Lance Carberry, who was also at the press briefing, told media operatives that all and sundry have the responsibility to ensure that the government could pass the probity test.
“Where there is a very clear case that the government has been involved in criminality, we expect the government to do what is necessary and if it is reluctant to do it, we have to continue as citizens to put pressure on them,” said Carberry.
As it relates to the recent accusation by Robert Simels that seemingly implicates Dr Leslie Ramsammy, Backer said that the party was currently assessing the situation and will pronounce in detail in the future.
“In any decent government, the Minister would have tendered his resignation, but obviously in this government, the Minister doesn’t see it fit as his responsibility, morally or otherwise to resign when a matter of this nature occurs,” said Carberry.
According to Backer, it could no longer be denied that Roger Khan was involved in the narco trade in Guyana and was head of a criminal enterprise in this country.
She contended that the only thing left to be determined “Is the nature and extent of the involvement of the Jagdeo Administration.”
She pointed out that the evidence that has emerged from the court hearings, the information provided by American Government sources, and the revelations by Khan’s lawyers, point to the supportive involvement of the Jagdeo Administration.
“In fact, what now is beyond dispute, is that there was a long association between Roger Khan and the Jagdeo Administration. The facts are irrefutable.”
