– Chief-of-Staff
Recently, Guyana’s eastern neighbour, Suriname, has taken steps to beef up their Air Corps, and some believe that this is being done to support their plans for hydropower development in the southern part of the country that comes close to Guyana’s borders.
When questioned about the developments, Commodore Gary Bess, Chief of Staff said, “We are monitoring the situation in Suriname and we have a defence doctrine called Parity, which will obviously have to take effect driven by resources that are available.”
Parity is a doctrine that sets Guyana safe when it comes to some of it’s neighbours and Best said, “It is driven by the resources provided to the Defence Force to ensure that the parity is maintained, depending on which neighbour we are talking about.”
Few years back, a Suriname gunship evicted an oil rig that was drilling off the coast of Guyana. It was a territorial dispute between the two countries.
The dispute has since been resolved.
Following that incident, Venezuelan military personnel blew several dredges near their border to Guyana, killing a Guyanese miner.
