Footballs and Hygiene Kits presented
The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) continue to play a major role in the development of sports in Berbice.
The latest entities to benefit from the club’s benevolence were the Berbice Football Association (BFA) and the Rose Hall Town Interim Management Committee (RHTIMC). The donation to the entities was done in conjunction with Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints under the club’s ‘Say Yes to Sports Programme’.
The two bodies received footballs along with hygiene and education kits; the donation is worth a combined $116,000. The BFA will host an Under-13 tournament for clubs in the Ancient County.
The presentation to the RHTIMC was done in an effort to promote the game in the township. Secretary/CEO of the club and coordinator of the ‘Say Yes to Sports Programme’, Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony last Thursday said that football is the number two sport in Berbice after cricket and the club was delighted to lend a hand, as it is assisting to keep youths away from a life of drugs and crime.
The current BFA administration is doing a remarkable job of promoting the game and Foster pledged his club’s assistance to them in the future.
He disclosed that in October, the RHTY&SC will be launching a Trust Fund for Berbice footballers, where several clubs and young players would receive $200,000 in financial assistance to purchase equipment.
The long standing Secretary/CEO challenged the BFA to uphold high standards and urged them to spread the game to every village in the Ancient County of Berbice.
The RHTIMC received five footballs, which will used to promote the game in the township, following a special request made by Town Clerk Selwin Johnson.
BFA President Keith O’Jeer in accepting the donation expressed his gratitude to the RHTY&SC and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for their contribution towards the development of the game. O’Jeer assured the donors that the BFA would make good use of the gear to develop a proper nursery in the County.
The donation was another joint project of the club and church which saw over $1.2M worth of sport gear given out to schools and clubs over the past year.
Meanwhile, the cricket committee of the club has announced the appointment of Ronston Lawson as Senior Cricket Manager for their First Division team. He replaces long serving manager Hilbert Foster who has stepped down after 18-years of great service. Foster opted to step aside due to his pressing duties as Club Secretary/CEO.
As the Senior Manager, Lawson would have responsibility for preparation, practice, team meetings, team selection and transportation among other areas. Ravindranauth Kissoonlall has also been elected to the position of Organising Secretary, replacing Keith Hicks, who has accepted employment at an interior location. Mr. Kissoonlall served as Hicks’ assistant for over 10-years and brings to his new position, a wealth of experience.
