Twenty-one year old former Guyana youth player Ryan Hercules is enjoying a productive debut season England for the Shadwell Cricket Club in Leeds, Yorkshire.
The right-handed Essequibian fast bowler, who represented Guyana in the 2003 regional Under-15 tournament before playing for the national Under-19 team in 2005 and 2006, told Kaieteur Sport that he has learnt a lot from playing in English conditions and is working especially hard on his batting.
“I am training very hard and working on my batting as well, because I want to be a genuine all-rounder. I am being coached by Tony Bowery… He is a very good coach who worked with (England Test Cricketers) Ryan Sidebottom, Michael Vaughn and many other top players,” Hercules informed.
The athletic Guyanese, who plays at the local level for GNIC in Georgetown, arrived in England on April 7 and has so far played 10 matches.
“I have scored 484 runs and taken 19 wickets. I have four half centuries (51, 54 not out, 67 and 86 not out) and was a bit disappointed not to have reached a century when the innings ended with me 14 short,” Hercules stated.
The youngster says he has so far taken two 5-wicket hauls and captured three Man-of-the-Match awards.
“I am enjoying my first season so far. Our club’s other recent oversees players are Guyana’s Rayon Griffith, Romvill Brown and Shaun Findley. This year, Lorenzo Ingrim from Jamaica will also play in the 20/20 league along with me as the overseas players,” Hercules added.
The all-rounder feels that being a professional cricketer far away from home forces you to ‘grow up’ and become more matured.
“When you are on your own over here you tend to develop mental strength and become responsible and independent, since you are earning because of your performances and learning the fine art of cricket all the time.
This is a wonderful experience and I think it is very good for the development of young players both on and off the field,” Hercules disclosed.
The versatile cricketer said that he is expected to move to a better club next season and he is eager to return home and do well in the Inter-County tournament, to give himself a chance of playing senior regional cricket next year.
“There is a club by the name of Methely…. they play in the Yorkshire league…. they read about me in the newspapers and they have invited me to play with them next year as their overseas player. I am getting signed up with them at the end of next month,” said Hercules, who is hoping for another good showing in his match today.
