“I’ve been doing well on the international scene and my selection came as no surprise to me,” West Indies Rugby Captain Claudius Butts told Kaieteur Sport at the National Park last week.
Butts, who along with Ireland-based Kevin McKenzie has been chosen in the Select Squad announced by Rugby West Indies, was seen getting ready for a training session in preparation for the upcoming tour of Canada, which runs from July 19-26.
The tournament that the WI Team has been invited for the first time to participate in is the Abbotsford International Sevens, scheduled to be played in Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The lanky winger, who has left many defenders in his wake through a sudden burst of speed, disclosed that the tour is a welcome one for the WI players who’re based in the Caribbean and who usually are starved of consistent high level competitions.
“From the team’s point of view, it is good to get the opportunity to play once again at the international level,” Butts said.
He added that the tour will do a world of good for the team, especially those who’re based exclusively in the region.
The WI Captain believed that the more competitions they are able to compete in at the international level will certainly help to improve the standard of the game in the Caribbean.
Guyanese Albert La Rose and Richard Staglon are also the group of players named for consideration by Rugby West Indies, with one player still to be added to the 11 selected.
Butts, commenting on the chances of La Rose and Staglon informed that the only reason he can think of what has prevented the former from being among the first choice players is probably due to the processing of his resident status, which ultimately disqualifies him from obtaining a visitor’s visa.
La Rose according to Butts is an integral part of the unit and the only explanation he could find is the one mentioned above, while he added that Staglon is a bit unfortunate and hopefully sometime soon, he can breakthrough and finally be part of the squad.
Meanwhile, Butts said he will soon intensify his preparations, which will be guided by a specifically designed programme by Head Coach Joe Whipple.
It involves speed work for endurance and body strengthening exercises.
