Dear Editor,
All Guyanese are entitled to equal access to the economic and political resources of this country. The citizens of Guyana deserve and demand no less.
Guyanese have broken the shackles of slavery and indentured-ship, we have fought collectively against what was considered colonial oppression and colonial exploitation and have achieved political independence from the British, but that not withstanding, Guyana has demonstrated that it is not unique, in that Guyana’s politics is an accurate reflection of all plural societies, where politics operate along racial lines and the society unites when confronted by a common enemy or challenge.
The enemy or challenge which currently confronts Guyana is as a result of political polarisation and discrimination against some sections of the society and therefore Shared Governance or Partition is essential to the preservation or peaceful co-existence of Guyanese.
Political leaders are reminded that they have a duty to serve in the interests of all of the people of Guyana and I strongly believe that all the citizens’ needs cannot be met unless there is Shared Governance, Communal Equality or Guyana is partitioned. I wish to urge not only our political representatives but also stakeholders and civil society to engage expeditiously in dialogue and find consensus and make the notion of Shared Governance a reality in Guyana so that the fair and equitable distribution of our resources can truly become a reality.
The systems of Shared Governance or Partition would facilitate political involvement of all stakeholders; national development; the enrichment of the nation; the security of all Guyanese by instituting appropriate mechanisms to address the political, economic and social aspirations and concerns of all groups in Guyana.
As a citizen of Guyana, I urge President Jagdeo and the PPP Administration to demonstrate political and intellectual maturity by making Shared Governance a reality. That would be a good legacy for future generations and an end to the inherent feelings of distrust and lack of confidence in the political system.
President Jagdeo is aware that the call for Shared Governance is not new, the PPP cried for Shared Governance in the 1970s whilst in Opposition but did the then PNC Government grant any concession? The PNCR now in Opposition, at periodical intervals, calls for Shared Governance and the newcomers, the Alliance For Change, calls it Inclusiveness.
I anxiously await the call by the new aspiring PNCR Leader, Dr. Van West Charles for Shared Governance within the PNCR or destruction of the Party’s Structure.
I wish to see our political leaders not merely talking about Shared Governance, but implementing it. If discrimination and marginalisation is a perception, then make democracy a reality by instituting measures that enable appropriate representation of all groups.
Leaders put Guyana first.
Courtney Henry
