A restoration fund will be set up in order to secure funding for the rehabilitation of Le Repentir Cemetery. Royston King, Public Relations Officer within the Mayor and City Council, made this disclosure Wednesday during a press briefing at the Deputy Mayor’s Office.
Also attending were Deputy Mayor Robert Williams and members of the recently formulated Advisory Committee which was put together to guide the restoration process.
According to King, the idea of the fund came as a result of suggestions that were put forward to the municipality.
The noble cause, he said, is expected to attract the financial support of business entities and individuals.
“People will be allowed to participate in whatever way and take ownership of what we are doing. We are now in the process of putting out a report and we will meet again in a week’s time.
By that time we should have more details of the restoration fund worked out. But as it is right now, we are asking citizens to come onboard.”
According to Deputy Mayor Williams, although the government has promised to provide the municipality with a monthly fund of $10M, that money is not intended for restoration of the cemetery, but rather, the city’s enhancement.
“The cemetery will be utilising part of the $10M during this month’s activities, but we don’t know when again we can extract from that monthly $10M, funds for the cemetery. So the remaining operations in the cemetery will have to be seen as coming from Council’s direct funding and contributions from the community at large.”
Works to clear Le Repentir Cemetery are progressing relatively well, but there is still much more to be done, was the observation of three members of the Committee including Pastor Wendell Jeffrey, of the Practical Christianity Ministries, Ms Raheema Rahaman, of K. Rahaman and Sons Spares, and Robert D. Forrester, of Amazonia Development Foundation.
Their observation came as a result of a visit to the cemetery on Wednesday with the Deputy Mayor.
The three, in brief comments, emphasised the need for collaboration if the restoration of the cemetery is to become a reality.
Deputy Mayor Williams said that the City Engineer is expected to produce a work programme and a plan with input from the committee by next week, detailing the particulars of how the cemetery will be restored.
“With that draft, we will determine what the final programme and the final set of activities should be and we will attach a cost to that then we will let citizens know,” Williams said.
