Frederick Collins, holder of the National Scrabble title, in an interview with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, revealed that he intends to employ a few new strategies, during his clash against Abigail McDonald tomorrow.
The two will battle each other in a best of five games for the national title, with the winner set to receive $50,000 plus a trophy and the opportunity to represent Guyana at the World Championship later this year in Malaysia. The champ said that for the final, he intends to place more emphasis on tile tracking, a strategy that has become common place among members of the fraternity and a skill that his opponent has developed competently. He added that another plan he envisages he will have to implement is to blitz whenever he feels his opponent is using time against him. “What I found was that players were using time against me and that was giving me less time to word search,” Collins pointed out.
Collins said he felt that they utilised this strategy because they figured that his ability with words is more superior, so the plan was to reduce the time he has to search for words and play.
He further stated that the advantage he has is that most of the junior players are not familiar with the words that are pluralised, adding that even though McDonald is a very good player, he doesn’t think that her vocabulary is as vast as his comparably.
He, however, did admit that despite that advantage, it will still depend on how well he buys from the bag.
