Vanessa scored two victories, Coconut Boy returned to winning ways and The Gap also scored a big win.
But it was Tropical Passion that defied the odds and the inclement weather to create one of the biggest upsets in the horseracing circle. Tropical Passion blazed away with the $300,000 first prize in the main event, when the Rising Sun Turf Club, in collaboration with The Brother Hood Of Saint Andrew in the Anglican Diocese along with Banks DIH Limited and Rhythm Stars International Sounds of New Amsterdam, held the grand annual one day seven-event meet on Sunday last.
The day’s activities, which had good crowd support despite the inclement weather, saw several entertaining events.
The feature B class event, sponsored by Banks DIH Limited, saw Mr. Steve Mootoo’s Tropical Passion running out of the Rumours racing stable of Alness, Corentyne steamrolling its opponents in the wet.
The seven animals entered, all had a reasonable start as Sequins and Laura Lee in Flight held sway early, in the 1400m event. Too Straight failed to negotiate the turn and was out of contention early.
The battle up front continued along the back stretch as top contender Jumbo Joy was positioned in the pack waiting to make its move. Tropical Passion was also in the back bunch but beginning to make its move on the leaders. As the horses took the far turn, Tropical Passion, ridden by the experienced Rupert Ramnauth decided to spur his animal into full speed, timing its acceleration nicely.
The F class animal galloped with a passionate run down the home stretch, out-distancing all opponents to take home the coveted $300,000 and the Banks DIH trophy, from a fast finishing Jumbo Joy with Yap Drepaul on Board. Laura Lee in Flight held on for third, with Illogical claiming fourth.
Coconut Boy of the Farinha stable and trained by Fazal Habibullah, returned to winning ways to claim his first victory of the season as he led from gate to pole in the co-feature three-year-old event.
Jockey Kumar Singh aboard Coconut Boy, ground out his opponents to carry away the $200,000 first prize and the Dr Phillip Da Silva trophy. Prixie Fire came in second and Night Crescendo third in the 1100m sprint which was the distance for all the other races.
Vanessa of the Crawford Stable and owned and trained by Senior Council Marcel Crawford with Jockey Daniel Floris in the stirrups, was unstoppable as he shone brightly on the damp day to secure two victories in the G and I class races with devastating runs down the home stretch.
It first burned up the challenge of Strike the Fire, Casino Royal and Kavinci to win the ‘I class and lower race and the $90,000 first prize.
Vanessa then came back to close the day’s proceeding and soaked up its rivals in the G class showdown, taking the winners cheque of $100,000, ahead of Prospectors Pride, Rude Boy and Kavinci.
The Gap with Prem Chandra in the saddle outdistanced stablemate Laura Lee in Flight to take top honours in the F class match up and the $160,000 purse.
Strike D Fire, ridden by Dexter Ross, was too hot for his opponents, returning to capture the J and K race ahead of Red Bull and Lenny’s O’ Halo and the $80,000 prize.
War Path piloted by Paul Delph, destroyed all in the L class match up to claim the 75,000 first prize. Rum Till I Die and Clear Vision finished second and third.
Over 60 horses took part in the day’s proceedings, which had some $2.5M in cash and other incentives.
Crawford Sable took all the individual prizes available.
The stable was adjudged the champion stable, while Senior Council Marcel Crawford was the champion trainer and owner.
Vanessa of the Crawford Stable was the champion horse on show, while Jockey Daniel Floris received accolades as the Champion Jockey. The top performers all received trophies compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the trophy Stall in Bourda Market.
