Dear Editor,
In your issue of Monday June 01st 2009 Kaieteur News published a report captioned “Parliamentary committee still to get CLICO [Guy] annual reports”.
I am not going to list all of the inaccuracies that this article contains but the very last paragraph tells the public this, and I quote, “the committee has been lambasted in the past for its failure to effectively monitor and investigate the CLICO [Guyana] affairs”
This is utter nonsense, the Economic Services Committee (ESC) had nothing to do with oversight of the CLICO matter and it was not mandated to do so until there was a public disclosure of irregularities, when the Commissioner approached the Supreme Court to be made the judicial manager of the entity known as CLICO Guyana; in the accompanying furor which followed, the leader of the opposition was forced to demand by motion in the house that there should be a public enquiry into the matter.
The wider Parliament denied Mr. Corbin’s motion but instead passed this matter to the Economic Services Committee early in May 2009 for monitoring that is all!
Someone has already been shot in this affair, you looking to get the rest of us shot as well?
Whoever was negligent and lambasted in the CLICO matter it was not the Economic Services Committee [ECS] of the Parliament.
What I will say is that we the opposition party members in the ECS are not at all happy with the slowness at which this matter is proceeding in the committee.
