Led by five goals from the impressive Michael Pedro, Santos taught University of Guyana (UG) a lesson in penetrating the defence, as the students went down 9-1 in the opening game of Sunday’s double-header, at the Campton ground, as action continued in the Guyana Football Association (GFA) Western Union Division One League.
Daniel Favorite then found the back of the net twice and got support from Omali Nassy, as Uprising whipped Black Pearl 3-nill in the day’s feature game.
UG were totally dominated although Eson Pearson scored a consolation goal in the 7th minute, as Santos were large and in charge at half-time with UG reeling 5-1.
Christopher Williams opened the scoring as early as the 4th minute for Santos and even before UG had time to settle down their defence was breached two minutes later when Jamal Downer made it 2-nil.
Pedro got into the action by beating the UG custodian three times in the space of 12 minutes, scoring in the 16th, 24th and 28th to leave the Turkeyen side wobbling when the half-time whistle briefly halted their misery.
UG’s pain was compounded further in the 47th minute when Joseph Payne hit in Santos’ 6th goal, while the live-wire Pedro again found the back of the net in the 59th minute.
Another goal, this time from Jermain Bamfield (61), completely took the fight out of UG before Pedro crowned a productive day at the office by scoring his 5th goal, 18 minutes before the close.
In the feature encounter, Favorite gave Uprising a 1-nil lead in the 7th minutes before firing in his second goal in the 25th as Uprising ended the first half with a 2-nil lead.
Nassy then scored in the 52nd minute for Uprising who ensured that none of the Black Pearl raids on their goal were successful.
The top four teams in the round-robin tournament will advance to the Super-Four stage of the competition. Western Tigers are the defending champions. The winners and runners-up will gain automatic promotion to the 2010 Premier League.
The action continues on Sunday at the same venue with another double-header. Kick-off times are 14:00hrs and 16:00hrs. (Sean Devers)
