“Work and memory may be perpetuated to benefit of calypso”- Culture Minister
“Be inspired by Lady Guymine’s achievements and professionalism to lift your efforts to excellence,” is the advice of Culture Minister, Dr Frank Anthony, to proponents of Calypso.
Both the government and the Culture Ministry, dubbed the late Guyanese calypsonian “a fallen cultural icon,” and Dr. Anthony expressed condolences to the relatives, friends and the Calypso fraternity.
While echoing the need for further uplifting of the art-form in Guyana, he stated that her family and fans can be assured that “she contributed positively to Guyana’s cultural image.”
He commented on her professional and witty, yet sensual flair. Dr Anthony recalled that ever since her initial public appearance, singing ballads, Guymine could never be accused of mediocrity. She was an instant, celebrated star performer in her heydays on the local shores, he said.
The Ministry is open to suggestions, by which her work and memory may be perpetuated, to the benefit of calypso.
Saluting the pioneer who has now opted for a well deserved rest, the Minister reflected on her winning twice, the male dominated calypso monarchy.
Dr. Anthony also highlighted the fact, that while she toured the region, and eventually migrated to the United States, she remained patriotic and kept Guyana’s musical flag flying high.
Lady Guymine passed away at her daughter’s Kitty home, Saturday last. She had returned to Guyana in February; 2006. Guymine was hospitalised in the United States of America and under went surgery for the removal of a tumour.
