Soroya Simmons, Britany Van Lange, Athena Gaskin, Niall Roberts, Sheik Amir, Omali Dare, Noelle Smith and Daniel Scott achieved qualification standards yesterday for the upcoming Goodwill Swimming Games.
Simmons defeated Britany Van Lange (1:21.16) and Aureyah Payne (1:27.10) in a time of 1:21.00 seconds to make the Goodwill Games’ ‘B’ Standard along with Van Lange in the Girls’ 100m Backstroke event.
Van Lange then returned in the 50m Freestyle race to equal Noelle Smith’s 2006 record with 31.23 seconds, which was a ‘B’ Standard qualification time. She defeated Aureyah Payne (33.61) and Simmons (35.45) in the race.
Gaskin made the ‘B’ mark in the 13-14 Girls’ 50m Freestyle with a 31.86 time that was well ahead of second place finisher, Darcy Chambers’ 34.70 and third place Ann Layne’s 36.05 time in the event.
Amir and Dare both qualified in the ‘B’ category of the 13-14 Boys’ 50m Freestyle race with times of 27.45 and 28.55 respectively. Jason Brown finished a distant third in the event with his 35.69 time.
Amir also made a similar mark in the 100m Freestyle with a time of 1:01.01 defeating Dare (1:06.16) and Joseph Seguina (1:06.61). Smith made the ‘B’ Standard mark in the 50m Freestyle with a winning 30.39 time.
Roberts swam his way to a record 50m Freestyle time and ‘A’ Standard qualification with a 24.16 seconds race. He defeated Stephen Soares (26.94) and Henk Lowe (27.82) in the process. He also qualified in the 100m Freestyle.
Daniel Scott made the ‘B’ Standard in the Under-8 Boys’ 50m Breaststroke with a 50.42 time.
The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Independence Meet was held to identify a team for the Goodwill Games in Barbados in August.
