Three armed bandits bolted for safety leaving one of their weapons behind, after meeting up with strong resistance from a Martysville, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara shopkeeper and his son on Saturday night.
The shopkeeper, Mohamed Haniff and his son, managed to wrestle a .38 revolver with five live rounds from one of the bandits.
However, the weapon failed to function even though Haniff’s son, Safraz, pulled the trigger several times.
In the end, the bandits made good their escape with three gold chains which they took from the son.
Haniff related, that he was sitting at the front of his shop when three men approached the entrance at around 22:30 hours. Two of them entered the premises, while one remained outside.
According to Haniff, the two men that had entered the shop, asked for $200 worth of coins to play pool.
Haniff said that he did not have the slightest idea that the men would turn out to be bandits, so he decided to pull down the shutters at the front of his shop.
But as he and his son were doing this, the two ‘pool players’ confronted them with their guns drawn.
“Dem put one gun pon me and one gun pon he. One lash me with de gun in me head and me and he start fight,” Haniff said.
He then managed to knock the gun out of the man’s hand and then kicked it out of reach. All the time his son was fighting with the other bandit.
Eventually, Haniff’s son managed to free himself and picked up the weapon that was struck from one of the bandits’ hand. The other bandit appeared confused, and stood transfixed as his accomplice tried desperately to retrieve his weapon.
“Me son collect de gun and he put it fuh shoot he (bandit) but de gun nah shoot,” the businessman said.
The disarmed bandit then made a desperate attempt to wrestle the gun from the businessman’s son’s hand, but the weapon was thrown out of reach.
Haniff eventually picked it up and the bandits, sensing that they were in trouble, bolted from the business place with the businessman and his son in hot pursuit.
“They didn’t really get nothing from de shop, dey just pull off me son chain dem and run away,” Haniff told this newspaper.
Haniff, said that maybe it was good that he did not shoot the bandits, since he believes that the police would have been investigating him for having an unlicensed gun.
According to Haniff, the men had visited his shop on Friday, and three times earlier Saturday to make small purchases, so he did not suspect that they were bandits when they came back on Saturday night.
Following the attack, Haniff contacted the neighbourhood Community Policing Group and handed over the weapon to them. The police were subsequently called in to investigate.
