Records went through the window on the first day of competition of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Independence Meet, taking place at the Castellani Pool and hosted by the Dolphin Speed Swim Club.

Competing in the 18 and over category, Jamaal Sobers shattered two records; Noelle Smith also rewrote two with Britany van Lange, Niall Roberts and Kristyl Robinson also setting new marks.
The meet is being used to select Guyana’s Squad for the 2009 Goodwill Games to be held in Barbados this August. Sobers achieved new marks in the 50 butterfly of 27.71 toppling his old record of 27.89 set in March of this year; set a new standard of 2:04.85 in the 200m freestyle again pushing out his March 09 achievement of 2:05.39;
Smith, who continues to improve despite being taxed with preparations for examinations, erased Kristyl Robinson’s November 2006 50m butterfly record of 35.25, with a new time of 34.39. She also swam a commanding race in the 100m breaststroke posting 1:28.39 to shatter Jacqueline Cadogan’s 1999 record of 1:32.68. Smith also made the Goodwill qualifying ‘A’ grade of 1:28.82.

Britany van Lange

Robinson achieved her new records in the girls 18 and over 200m freestyle of 2:04.54 brushing aside her own national record of 2:41.76 set in March this year. Her second came in the Cummings 30, Kenrick La Fleur 3 for 29, Amir Hussain 3 for 33. Fyrish 76 in 19.2 overs with John Percival 4 for 13, Travis Williams 3 for 15.

At Bush Lot Farm, Kennard’s Memorial beat Mibicuri Strikers by 190 runs. Kennard’s Memorial 273 in 38 overs with Doodnauth Ramnarine 67, Hemraj Mankarran 44, Andrew Persaud 36, Sanjay Seeraj 4 for 52, Mibicuri Strikers 83 in 25 overs, Sumesh Mangru 3 for 5, Tamesh Ramessar 3 for 24.
At No. 43, No. 43 Scorpion beat No. 48 Cavaliers by 5 wickets. No. 48 Cavaliers; 65 in 29.4 overs, Muneshwar Imrit 57, Nigel Bhownauth 3 for 19. No. 43 Scorpion 166 for 5 in 25.2 overs with Bisram Samaroo 58, Haimdat Homraj 3 for 26.
At No. 45, No. 43 Scorpion beat No. 45 by 124 runs. No. 43 Scorpion 221 for 7 in 30 overs with Jamla Crawford 86, Mahendra Sooknauth 50, Nigel Bhownauth 34. No. 45, 97 runs in 27.1 overs.
