The Rising Sun Turf Club on the West Coast of Berbice is set to be a hive of activity today, when its one day meet organised by the Rising Sun Turf Club, in collaboration with the Brotherhood of St Andrew in the Anglican Diocese.
The event, dubbed the sprint meet, with none of the races being over 1400m. According to the organisers all systems are in place and set for this to be the biggest Race meet so far for the year.
With this being the final event for the first half of the year a large crowd is expected to be in place. This is the first event at that entity for this year and as such the organisers have pulled out all the stops to make sure that the facilities are in top shape. The track has been completely relayed and some fast times are expected. The Grand Stand has also been refurbished, while running water and toilet facilities have been improved.
Seven races are carded for the day and over 60 of the country’s top horses have taken entry. Over two million ($2.5) in prizes and other incentives are at stake.
Banks DIH Limited and Rhythm Stars International have once again teamed up to add entertainment to the day’s activity.
The Beverage Company has taken charge of the feature B class event and has donated over $550,000 in total prizes available for the event. The winner will run away with $300,000 and the Banks DIH trophy over 1400m. Miss Republic, Jumbo Joy, Delmur Gold and Sequins are the favourites, but one cannot overlook the threat posed by the foreign invasion, which will be led by Sweet Caramel, Too Straight and Illogical.
The battle of the 3-year-olds open event, between Coconut Boy and Sweet Romance is expected to continue in the 1100m sprint, which has some $200,000 as first prize. Night Crescendo, Prixie Fire, Lady of My Dreams and Pleasure Star are the other top runners in this race.
In the E and lower even there is $160,000 available for the winner and the distance is also 1100m. Alphabet, Laura Lee in Flight, the Gap and Rude Boy will highlight an expected tight race.
Finishing Touch will be looking to close off its opponents in the G and lower 1400m gallop and claim the first prize of $100,000. Among the others looking to steal some of the glory are Tropical Passion, Kavinci, Alphabet, Prospectors Pride, Vanessa and Casino Royale.
The ‘I and lower 1100m race has $90,000 as the top prize. Those expected to enter the starting gates are Vanessa, Casino Royale, Red Bull, Vanessa and Rukia.
The J and K sprint will go for a distance of 1100m with a purse of $80,000, while the L class 1100m dash will see the winner collecting $75,000.
Among some of the other top notch horses on show are Natural Black, Gold Finer, Sunday Star, Strike D Fire and Wonder Light.
Race time is 13.30 hrs. The champion jockey and trainer will receive trophies, compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market.
Horse owners and other connections are being reminded that if they or their animals are not fully registered with the Guyana Horse Racing Authority, they will not be allowed to participate. They can get in touch with Secretary Ghansham Singh or Veterinary officer Dr. Dwight Waldron.
The GHRA will also like to remind the owners that their animals must be examined by the doctor on race day before they are allowed to compete.
