DEAR EDITOR,
I wish to commend the Executive of the Ex-GDF Association of Guyana for excellent voluntary work being done in the interest of the less fortunate former soldiers.
I attended its last statutory meeting and was greatly impressed by the various committees’ reports and the actions that were taken to ease the suffering of ex-soldiers.
Lt. Col (rtd) George Gomes, President of the Ex-GDF Association of Guyana and his staff on the executive are working voluntarily and should be commended for the good work they are doing.
Female soldier, Beverley Somerset, Welfare Officer of the association, presented an impressive report.
It was noted that between January 18-31, 2009, there were eighty-five shut-ins, and hampers and other items were distributed to needy former soldiers in hospitals, the Palms and other homes.
The association also contributes funds towards funeral expenses whenever a former GDF soldier dies and the family is in need of help.
I must also mention that the financial report presented was accepted by its members as sound and good.
The main objective of the Ex-GDF Association is to offer some kind of support to former soldiers who may be in need of help due to various difficult circumstances after leaving the GDF.
Ex-GDF Sergeant Wayne, (deceased) ended up as a beggar on the streets of Georgetown and there was no one to help him at that time.
What a shame. He was a friend of mine that served the same company as I did. May his soul rest in peace.
Reginald Dipoo Retired Staff Sergeant GDF PPP/C Regional Councillor, RDC Region 4
