The boxers comprising tomorrow night’s ‘Linden Invasion’ card, scheduled for the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground tomorrow night are ready to throw down the gauntlet in what is expected to be a fistic night of fury.
Less than 24 hours to the first bell, the Western Union and Bill Express (WU&BE) has acquiesced to a request for sponsorship to ensure the successful promotion of the card.
Yesterday afternoon, at a simple ceremony at the entity’s Water Street office, Marketing Manager Natheeah King contributed an undisclosed sum to the promoter, Carwyn Holland, on behalf of her firm. The monetary donation is expected to bolster the expenses required to offset the card.
Offering brief remarks, Ms. King reiterated her organisation’s support for young sports persons. She said that for too long the sporting public has been fed an unhealthy diet of foreign material. She also said that the Linden boxing card would enable local sports enthusiasts to assess the quality of talent possessed by the boxers. “My organisation is proud to be associated with Leon Moore, one of the talented Guyanese fighters,” she said.
In response, head of Holland’s Entertainment Promotions, and promoter of the card, Carwyn Holland expressed sincere gratitude to King and Western Union and Bill Express. “Thank you very much for your support,” he said. Indeed it would go a far way in the promotion of the bout,” he concluded.
The card promises much excitement. Leon Moore, who had initially suffered an injury during the early part of his training programme that forced the postponement of the card, would fancy his chances against Mark Murray in an eight-round affair.
Debbie Tyson, fighting out of Georgetown, faces Lindener, Sharon Warde in a highly anticipated six-round thriller. Tyson’s claim to fame is based on her first round stoppage of Warde’s village mate, Avlon Scotland. Warde has since promised to avenge that loss.
In another Linden/Georgetown matchup Cassius Matthews opposes Cecil Smith over 6 rounds in the lightweight division.
While the Shawn Corbin/Troy Lewis 6 rounds light/heavyweight matchup promises much, the showdown between Lindener, Fahaad ‘The Linden Giant’ Ali and ‘Big Bad’ Shawn Harris of Linden clash in a three-round exhibition match.
Both fighters are expected to tip the scales well over 300 pounds and already tongues are wagging as the pundits debate on the likely outcome of this match. Both fighters have been bragging and boasting, each saying that he is the better fighter.
If both fighters are to be taken seriously, there is no way that this fight would go the distance. Bell time is 19:00hrs, sharp.
