– lowers season best time
Caribbean Games track and field gold medal prospect, Aliann Pompey continued her fine performance this season in the last of her 400m races in Brazil, as the top athlete persists with preparations for major engagements.
Pompey ran 51.09 seconds to place second behind Jamaica’s Olympian, Bobby Gaye Wilkins (50.91) at her third meet in Brazil on Sunday following her record breaking feat two weeks earlier at the Rio Grand Prix.
The 51.09 time was the best of Pompey’s season so far and she is now ranked seventh in the world.
Her record breaking 51.45 mark had placed her at ninth in the world and she expressed elation over the ascendancy.
“I am really excited because I feel great. All I have to do is stay healthy and I think great things will happen this season. Workouts are going well,” Pompey, who is presently in the United States, told Kaieteur Sport via email.
She said that she attempts to improve each race and focuses on the things that went awry in previous races. “With each race, I work on something I did wrong in the last race, and the result is a better each time I compete,” she said. “This means that I have not peaked yet and that’s very promising. There’s not much else I can ask for this early in the season. I’m looking forward to the Caribbean Games and the World Championships,” the national athlete informed.
